The University of Minnesota women's basketball team is set to host the Subway Classic this weekend, welcoming Ohio, Maine and UNLV to Williams Arena for the event. The Golden Gophers open play Saturday at 12:00 p.m. vs. the Bobcats. The Black Bears and the Lady Rebels will follow with a contest at 2:00 p.m.
Pam Borton enters the contest just two wins away from No. 200 as Minnesota's head coach, boasting a 198-125 mark in Minneapolis thanks to a pair of victories last weekend to claim the Best Buy Classic title.
Minnesota won the Best Buy Classic last weekend with wins over Washington State, in double overtime, and Villanova. The Gophers shot 80 free throws during the two-game tournament, which included program records of 36 free throws made on 49 attempts vs. the Cougars in the opening game.
For her play during the Best Buy Classic, junior Micaëlla Riché was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Riché averaged a double-double with 24.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 68 percent from the floor.
With Riché's help, the Gophers look to improve their record to 3-0 on the year for the first time since 2007 with a win over Ohio. Minnesota is 2-0 all-time when facing the Bobcats, with the teams' last meeting coming on Dec. 8, 2000, a 92-73 victory for the Gophers on the road in Athens.
Ohio opened its season Tuesday with a 63-56 victory vs. Cleveland State. Shavon Robinson led a trio of Bobcats scoring in double figures with 15 points, followed by 13 points from Mariah Byard and 10 points and nine rebounds from Tina Fisher.
The consolation game of the Subway Classic is scheduled for Sunday at 11:00 a.m., while the championship game will follow at 1:00 p.m.
