Simenec, Smith Earn Big Ten Weekly Awards

The No. 12 University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team received two Big Ten Weekly Awards Tuesday for the fifth-straight week. Tori Simenec was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, while Kierra Smith was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.
Simenec helped the Gophers take down Iowa last weekend by posting three first-place finishes in the 200 free (1:48.25), the 200 IM (2:03.13) and the 400 medley relay (3:22.40). This honor marks the first Swimmer of the Week award for the sophomore this season and third total weekly award of her career.
Kierra Smith claimed the title in the 100 breast with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1:02.42 in the Gophers' victory over the Hawkeyes last weekend. This is Smith's third Freshman of the Week honor and her fourth overall weekly award of her young career.
