The Winter Cup is a USA Gymnastics sponsored meet that selects gymnasts to the National Team based on two days of performances. The meet is held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
There were 126 competitors at last year's event. This year the number has been reduced to 84 because it is an Olympic year.
Senior DJ Repp and freshman Ellis Mannon will have the honor of representing the Gophers in the 2012 Winter Cup. There are a number of different ways to qualify for the meet. Repp qualified through his NCAA placing in the all-around last season. Mannon qualified by virtue of competing in the 2011 VISA Championships and winning the pommel horse event.
Minnesota has a good history of gymnasts performing well at the Winter Cup. The last National Team member selected was Guillermo Alvarez who made the team in 2005 and 2009.
Repp competed in last year's meet but did not qualify for the national team.
"I feel like DJ and Ellis both are well prepared for the meet," head coach Mike Burns said. "I expect them to go out and perform their routines to the best of their abilities. The plan is to go out and hit our sets and then see how the results play out."
