University of Minnesota softball pitcher Sara Moulton was named Pitcher of the Week by the Big Ten Conference after going 2-1 on the weekend and throwing the 15th no-hitter in Minnesota history in the season opener. This award is Moulton's second of her career.
The sophomore posted a 0.74 ERA over 19 inning of work while allowing only just three hits and four walks. Over the four-game span, Moulton recorded two complete games and fanned 24 batters.
In the season opening game against Kent State, the sophomore threw only the 15th no-hitter in Gopher history. She followed the no-hitter with five innings of shutout ball against UNLV until the Rebels scored on a two-run homerun.
On Sunday, Moulton threw three innings in each game versus Weber State and CSU Bakersfield. She faced a total of 18 batters on the day and struck out 11. Moulton received the win versus CSUB but would not be granted the win against WSU becuase she didn't pitch the required number of innings (four).
This is the second time Moulton has been tagged Big Ten Pitcher of the Week with the last coming on March 14, 2011.
Moulton and the Gopher return to action this coming weekend as they travel to Tempe, Ariz. for the Littlewood Classic. Minnesota will play five games while in the Grand Canyon State, including one against the defending National Champion and host No. 1-ranked Arizona State.
