Game Preview: Gophers Host St. Cloud in WCHA First Round | Tickets are only $1!

Thirty-two years ago, February 22, 1980, the USA men's hockey team beat the Soviet Union in the unforgettable "Miracle on Ice" with the help of former Gopher Mike Ramsey.

More than three decades later, Mike's daughter, Gopher women's hockey freshman Rachel Ramsey, has taken the WCHA by storm. The defenseman leads the league in points among freshmen at her position. In the 34 games this season, she has recorded four goals and seventeen assists for twenty-one points. Last season, Rachel led her high school, Minnetonka, to the Class AA State Championship.

Her father, Mike Ramsey, won a national championship as a defenseman at the University of Minnesota, on the 1978-1979 version of Pride on Ice. He went on to play in the 1980 Winter Olympics for Team USA. He won a gold medal, and he was part of the Miracle on Ice team. Mike played in over a 1,000 games in the NHL with three different teams. Mike was also an assistant coach for the Minnesota Wild for 10 seasons until 2010.

Rachel scored her first collegiate goal against Union in her first career game as a Gopher earlier this season on Sept. 30, and also posted a three-point weekend earlier this month in a Gophers' sweep at Ohio State - a performance that garnered WCHA Rookie of the Week honors. Ramsey has four multi-point games this season. In the last two regular seasons (between Minnesota and Minnetonka High School), Rachel's teams have only been defeated six times -- over that same stretch, she has won 50 games.

Rachel Ramsey, and the rest of her teammates, will begin postseason play this weekend. They host St. Cloud State starting this Friday at 7:00 p.m.
