The Minnesota women's tennis team began the season unranked, but that is not the case anymore.
The Gophers, who have won eight of their first nine matches, checked in today at No. 30 in the latest ITA Rankings. Minnesota was ranked 71st prior to this week.
Minnesota, which ended last season 8-16, has stormed out of the gates this year with an 8-1 record. They are 4-1 against ranked opponents as they have beaten No. 50 William & Mary (5-2 win) and No. 62 Virgina Tech (7-0 win) at home. They also are 2-0 on the road as they traveled south to beat No. 75 Wake Forest (5-2 win) and No. 46 North Carolina State (5-2 win).
Their lone loss was a 5-2 setback to No. 28 Washington.
The Gophers, who are the third highest ranked Big Tean team behind No. 8 Northwestern and No. 14 Michigan, begin league play this weekend at No. 60 Wisconsin. The Badgers beat Minnesota 6-1 in Minneapolis last year.
Senior Alexa Palen, who is 8-0 this season, is ranked No. 105 in singles.
