The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team is going for its sixth straight victory on Saturday. The No. 6 Gophers will take on Iowa and Brockport in a tri-meet at home.
"Iowa is a team that is improving every week," head coach Mike Burns said. "JD Reive is a great young coach and is working on re-defining the Iowa program in his second year. Brockport is a college club program that continues to improve and strives to compete with top varsity programs in the country. We are thrilled to have them here for this tri-meet so they can gain competitive experience against programs that will challenge them to keep improving."
Minnesota has already competed against Iowa twice this year and has come out on top in both meetings. This will be Minnesota's first meeting of the season with the Brockport Golden Eagles.
The Gophers are coming off a road win at UIC where they scored a 345.8, their highest point total of the season thus far. The team is looking to further improve on that score as well as increase their hit percentage.
"Our main goal is to win with a higher hit percentage than we have had all year," Burns said. "The team is very close to having a break-out meet and pushing the 350-zone, so that's where we would like to be. But the score is something we don't have that much control over, so we like to shoot for the highest hit percentage we can muster."
Minnesota has not lost a meet since finishing fourth at the Windy City Invitational on January 14th. Over the course of their winning streak the Gophers have defeated Air Force, UIC, and Big Ten opponents Nebraska and Iowa.
"As the month of March approaches we will be facing some stiffer competition," Burns said. "So the winning we have experienced will be part of our formula for success. It builds a huge base of confidence and we will be using that to our advantage."
The meet will be held at the Sports Pavilion at 7pm. The Big Ten Network will be televising the event, tape-delayed, on March 10th at 3:30pm.
