Final Stats

The University of Minnesota softball team surrenders two runs in the bottom of the sixth to drop to Boston College in the final day of the Embassy Suites Classic, 2-1. The Golden Gophers (17-6) out hit the Eagles 6-3, but freshman Erica Meyer's solo home run wasn't enough to pull out the victory for the Maroon and Gold as they stranded nine runners on base.

The Gophers claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Meyer notched her first collegiate home run with a solo shot to right field.

Sophomore Sara Moulton held the Eagles' offense in check as she didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, but it was in the sixth that Boston College snatched the lead from Minnesota.

Boston College positioned runners on first and third after one Eagle reached by a Gopher fielding error and the other singled to right field. The two Eagles would be pushed over to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, which led up to a Brittany Wilkins two-out single to score the pair of runners.

Minnesota looked to regain the lead in the top of the seventh, but with runners on first and second, the Gophers' time was up as junior Kari Dorle popped out to short to end the game.

The Gophers had chances throughout the game as they loaded the bases in both the first and third inning, but Minnesota couldn't capitalize and left a total of nine runners on base.

Freshman Kaitlyn Richardson was the Gophers' top offensive threat in the contest as she reached base on each plate appearance, going 2-for-2 with a double and two walks.

Moulton threw all six innings for the Gophers and allowed only three hits while fanning 12 batters. Both runs that Boston College scored on Moulton were unearned.

The Maroon and Gold will remain in Florida to practice outside until Wednesday. The Gophers will then head for Boise, Idaho for the SpringHill Suites Invitational.
