The Golden Gophers are set to compete in the FAU Spring Break Championship in Lake Worth, Fla. The tournament runs from Friday, March 23, through Sunday, March 25, with 18 holes played each day. Minnesota finished fifth, and Jon Trasamar fourth at the event last season. Live results will be available at golfstat.com.
Minnesota is coming off of a 13th-place finish at the Schenkel Invitational. Among other improvements, head coach John Carlson hopes to see better driving from his team this weekend. Playing for the second week in a row--especially at an event where they have had previous success--will give the Gophers a good chance to bounce back from a few tough rounds.
"I think it's going to be a benefit for our guys, coming off a round that was fairly disappointing at Georgia Southern," Carlson said of the quick turnaround. "Sometimes a short week is good. We had a couple good days of practice."
The field: Fourteen teams will join Minnesota this weekend: Connecticut, DePaul, host FAU, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Jacksonville State, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan State, Murray State, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, USF, and Xavier. The Gophers have not yet faced the other two Big Ten teams in the field this season.
The course: The Fountains Country Club plays host to this year's tournament. The Gophers will be golfing on a different course from the one where they finished fifth last year, but Carlson said this course has a similar layout.
Note: Minnesota will compete for the third week in a row next week, at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. (March 31-April 1).
