Minnesota Finishes Hawkeye Invitational in Sixth

Minnesota finished in sixth place at the 11-team Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Iowa. The Gophers posted a score of 299 (+11) in the final round Sunday. For the entire tournament, Minnesota carded a score of 884 (+20). Junior Erik Van Rooyen led Minnesota. He registered a round of 70 (-2) today. He had the lowest round of the day among Gophers.
"Erik Van Rooyen came back after a disappointing error on his scorecard on Saturday to lead us on Sunday," said head coach John Carlson. "Everyone battled hard and had a great finish to the tournament. I think the entire weekend will serve as a warmup for the team as we head into the Big Ten Championships in two weeks."
Scores were up across the tournament today. David Haley Jr. was able to keep his score the same. Haley replicated his second-round 73 today. For the tournament, he posted a 221 (+5). Robert Bell carded a round of 77 to conclude his tournament at 223 (+7). Haley Jr. finished in a tie for 28th and Bell finished in a tie for 34th among individuals.
Sophomore Alex Gaugert made his first tournament appearance since the Gopher Invitational back in September. Gaugert finished the tournament shooting a score 227 (+11). Tyler Lowenstein rounded out his tournament posting a score of 79 (+7). For the tournament, Lowenstein was +14.
The Iowa Hawkeyes, the tournament's host, won the tournament. Iowa was able to hold off a late charge by their in-state rivals, Iowa State, to win by two strokes. Iowa posted a tournament score of 840 (+24). Iowa State's Nate McCoy won the individual title at -14. McCoy was six shots clear of Iowa's Chris Brant (-11), who finished second.
Among the six Big Ten teams competing at the classic, Minnesota finished third. The Gophers will take a week off and then turn their attention to the Big Ten Championships April 27-29 in French Lick, Ind.
