The University of Minnesota softball team started its Border Battle weekend off on the wrong foot as they got shutout by rival Wisconsin, 3-0. The Golden Gophers (21-12, 3-4 Big Ten) couldn't push across any runs as they only recorded five hits while sophomore pitcher Sara Moulton fanned eight batters.
Wisconsin (18-12, 4-3 Big Ten) jumped on the Gophers early as they pushed a run across in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Minnesota would surrender two more additional runs in the following innings to make the score 3-0.
The Maroon and Gold attempted to make a comeback, but they were unable to get their bats alive. Each of the Gophers' hits came from a different player, but no hits were garnered in the same inning.
Moulton was the bright spot in the contest for the Gophers. Despite allowing three runs, two of which were earned, the Eagan, Minn. native struck out eight batters while permitting eight hits.
Minnesota looks to rebound from today's disappointing loss as they are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against the Badgers. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon while the second is slated for 2 p.m.
