Dahl Advances to Quarterfinals at NCAA West Preliminary

The Minnesota women's track and field team started competition today at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. Eight Golden Gophers competed today, with one advancing to the quarterfinals and several others coming close to qualifying for quarterfinals or nationals.
Sharyn Dahl advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinal round in the 400-meter hurdles. She turned in a time of 1:00.40 in the second preliminary heat and then had to wait through four more heats to find out where she stood. Kelly Stalpes (1:00.55) finished just behind Dahl, just missing the cut for quarterfinals. If Dahl finishes in the top 12 on Friday, she will earn a trip to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines.
In the shot put, Christina DeLakis made the top 16 after three throws with an impressive toss of 51-9 1/4 (15.78m) on her first attempt. This earned her three additional throws, but she was not able to improve her mark to move into the top 12. DeLakis finished 15th.
Later in the day, Todea-Kay Willis also finished 15th in her event. She recorded a season best in the long jump to earn three more jumps. Her jump of 20-5 1/4 (6.23m) came on her second attempt of the evening. Willis was a few inches shy of a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.
Chimerem Okoroji came up .08 seconds out of the quarterfinals in the 100 meters. Her time of 11.71 was good for 32nd in the event. Alena Brooks also missed out on a sprint final, finishing 36th in the 400 meters.
Also competing for Minnesota on Friday were Emily Betz in the javelin and Rachel Drake in the 10,000 meters.
