Spencer to Compete in 200 Breaststroke Finals at Olympic Trials

Minnesota senior Haley Spencer advanced to the 200-meter breaststroke finals of the U.S. Olympic Trials at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., after placing eighth overall in the semifinals of the event Friday night with a program long course meter record time of 2:27.21.
Former Minnesota swimmer Keri Hehn also made an appearance in the semifinal, but missed a shot at the finals after finishing the event with a time of 2:30.07, which was good for 13th place overall.
The finals will take place Saturday night and will be broadcast live on NBC beginning at 7:00 p.m. Spencer is the second Gopher to appear in the finals of an event at the Trials, with former swimmer David Plummer finishing just shy of an Olympic bid with a third-place showing the 100-meter backstroke finals.
Earlier in the day, Spencer finished sixth overall in the preliminaries of the 200-meter breaststroke with a then-program long course meter record time of 2:27.90. Spencer's former teammate, Jillian Tyler, who has already earned a spot on the Canada Olympic Team, held the previous program record of 2:29.06 since 2009.
Hehn clocked a time of 2:29.97 in the preliminaries to finish 13th overall and advance to the semifinals.
Tomorrow morning's preliminary schedule includes the 800-meter freestyle and 200-meter backstroke, while the evening will include semifinals of the 200-meter backstroke, as well as the finals of the 200-meter breaststroke and 100-meter freestyle.
