Gophers Defeat Miami (OH) in Three

The University of Minnesota earned a 3-0 win in the morning session of Saturday's Diet Coke Classic. Minnesota defeated the Miami (OH) Redhawks 25-10, 25-18, 25-19 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Tori Dixon led all attackers as she had a match high 14 kills and hit .824 with a solo block and four block assists. Ashley Wittman also reached the double-digit kill mark with 10 kills in 16 attempts. Daly Santana had seven aces in the match, including five in the first set.
Minnesota bettered its attack game from last night as it hit .533 as a team. The Gophers held a match-best .667 percentage in the first set and did not commit their first attack error until the second set. It was the only attack error in the first two sets, while having four in the third and final set. The Gophers hit .526 against Long Island and had six errors.
Paced by Santana's five service aces, Minnesota cruised to an easy 25-10 set win. By the ninth point of the first set, Santana had already established three of her five aces of the set. From the fifth to the ninth point of the set, it was all Dixon and Santana to put the Gophers up, 9-1. Dixon added three kills in that span, while Santana added three aces. Minnesota would also go on a 8-0 run at the end of the first set to cushion its lead to 23-8. Santana would have another two aces in that span giving the Gophers their 21st and 22nd point of the set. Minnesota won the set on a Tabberson kill to go up, 1-0.
Minnesota had a 17 kills in the second set as Katherine Harms had five to lead the Gophers to a 25-18 set win. With Minnesota holding a 13-12 lead, it would go on a small run at 6-2. With a kill by Dixon to put it at set point, two service errors were committed by the two teams as the Gophers went up 2-0 after two sets.
Trailing 4-0 early and again at 12-18, Minnesota would regroup and take the third and final set at 25-19. Down four to the Redhawks, Minnesota would have a kill by Harms, a kill by Dixon and an ace by Lindsey Lawmaster to pull within one. The Gophers would tie the set at 14 on a Miami attack error and take the lead for good on a kill by Harms. Minnesota would have back-to-back kills by Wittman and Dixon and an ace by Santana to go up 18-15. With the lead the Gophers never looked back en route to their fourth win of the season.
