Sept. 13, 2012
The University of Minnesota women's golf team will open the 2012-13 season by traveling to East Lansing, Mich. to take part in the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University. The invitational, played at MSU's Forest Akers West, is scheduled for Sept. 15-16.
The Gophers welcome back its entire roster from a season ago, led by junior Banchalee Theinthong. She led Minnesota in her sophomore campaign with a 75.83 stroke average, the third lowest in program history.
The lone senior on the roster is Jackie Shepherd, the recent winner of the 17th Minnesota Women's State Match Play Championship. She had the second-lowest stroke average last season at 76.36, the eighth-lowest single-season effort in program history.
"I am looking forward to see how the players have progressed compared to this time last year", said second year head coach Michele Redman. "The nice part of that is we had a qualifier this last weekend in some tough conditions and I was very happy with the score so I am very curious to see how they play in the tournament."
The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday, Sept. 15, beginning with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun, and will play 18 on Sunday, Sept. 16.
