Gophers in Sixth After First Day of Mary Fossum Invite

The University of Minnesota opened the season with a 36-hole score of 611 following the first day of the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing , Mich.
The Gophers, who are in sixth place, opened with a combined morning round of 303 and finished with an afternoon round of 308. The third and final round of the Mary Fossum Invitational will be Sunday, beginning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. CT.
Purdue leads the invitational with a 36-hole score of 578, eight strokes ahead of host Michigan State. Notre Dame (588) is third, followed by Texas State (603) and the University of Miami (607). A pair of Boilermakers - Paula Reto and Kishi Sinha - are tied with Texas State's Krista Puisite atop the individual leaderboard with 36-hole cards of two-under par 142.
In the opening round, Minnesota junior Banchalee Theinthong, a second team All-Big Ten performer a season ago, paced the locals with a two-over par 74. She led the Gophers as a sophomore with a stroke average of 75.83.
Sophomore Carmen Laguna finished one shot behind Theinthong with a 75 followed by senior Jackie Shepherd with a 78, sophomore Sarinee Thitiratanakorn with a 76 and fellow sophomore Anna Laorr with an 82.
Theinthong added another round of 74 in the afternoon session and will begin Sunday's final round in a tie for ninth place. Laguna is in a tie for 12th place after an afternoon round of 76 while Shepherd and Thitiratanakorn are in a tie for 45th place with 36-hole cards of 156. Laorr added an afternoon round of 81 and is in a tie for 77th place.
