Gophers in Eighth After First Day in New Mexico

Minnesota's stroke leader a season ago, senior Erik Van Rooyen, is tied for second individually after 36 holes at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate with a five-under par 139. Van Rooyen started the day with a career-low tying six-under par 66 in the first round and finished with a one-over par 73 in the afternoon session.
The Gophers are in eighth place after 36 holes of competition in New Mexico with a total score of 596. The field remains close as the fourth thru eighth place teams are 10 strokes apart.
Freshman Jon DuToit registered a score of three-over par 149 and is tied for 32nd. Junior Alex Gaugert's score of eight-over-par 152 is tied for 51st while redshirt senior Robert Bell is in 78th after carding rounds of 81 and 77, totaling a 158. Senior David Haley Jr. is tied for 79th with a score of 162.
The Gophers were in third place after the first round of competition with a total score of 288, a season low for the locals.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow with tee times starting at 8:45am CT. Live scores from the final round can be found at golfstat.com.
