Gophers Win 6-3, Sweep Bulldogs

DULUTH, Minn. - Freshman Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) and senior Kelly Terry (Whitby, Ont.) each recorded three points as the No. 1 Minnesota women's hockey team skated to a 6-3 win and a series sweep over No. 7 Minnesota Duluth in front of 1,594 fans at AMSOIL Arena Saturday night.
Eight Gophers recorded points, including seven multi-point efforts. Cameranesi had two goals and one assist, while Terry scored once and tallied two helpers. Senior Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L.) netted two goals.
Junior Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids, Minn.), sophomore Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and freshman Kelsey Cline (Bloomington, Minn.) each recorded two assists, and sophomore Maryanne Menefee (Lansing, Mich.) recorded two points on one goal and one assist.
"Anytime you get a sweep on the road against a top-10 opponent, it's a big deal," head coach Brad Frost said. "Adding the fact that it was against UMD up in their barn, I thought our players responded extremely well and showed a lot of character. It was great to come out with two wins this weekend."
The Gophers (6-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA) outshot the Bulldogs, 37-30, including a 17-11 advantage in the first period. Sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) made 27 saves. The Bulldogs received 31 saves from sophomore Kayla Black, who fell to 1-3-1 on the year.
Along with Black in net, Minnesota Duluth (2-3-1, 0-3-1 WCHA) was led by senior Jenna McParland's two points on one goal and one assist.
The Gopher win pushed Minnesota's NCAA-record winning streak to 55 games.
Balanced scoring saw the Gophers strike twice in each period and the Bulldogs score once each frame. Minnesota was 3-for-6 with the man advantage while holding the Bulldogs scoreless on six power-play opportunities.
Davis scored twice in the first period, bookending a Bulldog goal by Hannah Bramm. Davis struck first at the 4:47 mark before Bramm evened the score at 1-1 at 7:33. The Gophers regained the lead and never looked back when Davis poked the puck past Black on the power play. Bona and freshman Megan Wolfe (Eagan, Minn) picked up assists on the play.
Menefee and Cameranesi gave Minnesota a 4-2 lead after two periods. Menefee redirected a shot from the point by Cline at 8:32, and Cameranesi made it 4-1 when she netted the game-winner on the power play at 15:52. However, UMD's Jamie Kenyon sent a centering pass to an open McParland from behind the net at 17:22, and McParland snuck a one-timer past Leveille to keep the Bulldogs within two goals.
The third period saw Terry score off a feed from Cameranesi at the 2:08 mark to make it 5-2. Terry then returned the favor, setting up Cameranesi's second of the game on the power play at 4:46. Sidney Morin scored the Bulldogs' final goal at 5:46.
The game marked Cameranesi's first multi-goal game as a Gopher, and she is now riding a three-game point streak.
"Things are finally coming together," Cameranesi said. "I played center in high school, so it's taken some getting used to playing wing now. We have our lines figured out now. Everything's coming together."
The Gophers continue their road swing at Bemidji State next weekend. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford Center.
