The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher soccer team ended a tough battle with Iowa in a two goal draw at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday evening.
The match was off to a quick start when the Hawkeyes were able to find the net as Anne Marie Thomas headed a ball off of a corner from Ashley Catrell. The Gophers were quick to respond as transfer Taylor Stainbrook was able to grab her third goal of the season assisted by senior Steph Brandt.
Going into the half, the score remained tied at one. The Gophers and the Hawkeyes came out ready to fight for the game-winning goal and the Gophers were able to find the net first in the 61st minute. Senior Steph Brandt was able to score and bring the Gophers to a 2-1 lead. She was assisted by junior co-captain, Katie Thyken.
Iowa senior Alex Melin were quick to answer as they fired past Minnesota goalkeeper, Tarah Hobbs, in the 66th minute bringing the score to two goals each. The Gophers and the Hawkeyes battled through the last twenty four minutes and then through two ten minute overtimes and ended in a draw, two all.
Iowa picked up two yellow cards in the match against Minnesota. The first to Bri Tolle in the 87th minute of play and the second came in the 109th minute to Anne Marie Thomas during the second overtime.
The draw with Iowa allows Minnesota to move to 9-4-2 on the season and 2-3-2 in Big Ten play while the Iowa Hawkeyes move to 11-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Big Ten.
GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES
Senior forward Steph Brandt had a stand out game for the Golden Gophers as she scored a goal and assisted Taylor Stainbrook in scoring the other goal of the game for Minnesota. Brandt is coming off an ACL injury from last season that had her benched for the majority of the year. She scored in the match against Jacksonville in September and Friday evening's goal marks her second on the season and she now has two assists on the year.
Sophomore Taylor Stainbrook was able to find the net for the third time this season as she scored in the 8th minute of play for the Golden Gophers. The last time Stainbrook scored was in the Aug. 23 match against her former team, the NDSU Bison, where she was able to score twice. She now has three goals on the season and three assists.
The leading scorer for the Golden Gophers, Katie Thyken, was able to add an assist to her overall seaon stats this evening as she helped Steph Brandt find the net in the second half. She now has two assists on the season and five goals on the year.
Freshman goalkeeper, Tarah Hobbs, was able to tally sixteen saves during the match against Iowa on Friday evening. She now has 78 saves on the season through twelve matches and leads the Big Ten not only in saves but also in saves per game and save percentage. She has only allowed twelve goals this season averaging one goal per game thus far.
NOTEABLES
With her 16 saves in the match against Iowa, Hobbs was able to break the program record for saves in a single match. The record was held by Lindsey Dare (15 at Brown on Sept. 10, 2006) and Teresa O'Hearn (15 at Ohio State on Sept. 30, 1994).
Minnesota is unbeaten at home this season with six wins and two draws. They take on No. 22 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon as they battle to keep that record alive.
The Gophers scored as many goals in Friday's match against Iowa as they scored in the entirety of the Big Ten season prior to the battle with the Hawkeyes.
The Golden Gophers will take on No. 22 Nebraska on Sunday afternoon. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. Before the match on Sunday, the three seniors on the roster for the Gophers will be honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the Golden Gopher Soccer program. The senior presentation will take place at 12:40 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
