- After finishing the conference season with a 4-5-2 record, the University of Minnesota women's soccer team has earned a spot in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament. The Golden Gophers received the No. 8 seed in the tournament and will battle the No. 1 seeded and regular season Big Ten Champion, Nebraska.
The tournament will be hosted by the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. The Maroon and Gold will take on No. 1 seeded Nebraska in the third game of the day on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 4:30 p.m. CT. The live stats and video links will be posted Wednesday morning. The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Big Ten Network will stream quarterfinals live on the Big Ten Digital Network, while the semifinals and finals will be available live on both BTN and BTN2Go.
"Our girls have worked hard all year, and to be rewarded with postseason play is fantastic," said head coach Stefanie Golan. "I am very proud of our team for coming up with some key wins throughout the season, and I know we are capable of beating anyone on any given day. We are excited for this next challenge and will work to finish strong."
Minnesota earned a berth to the Big Ten Tournament for the seventh consecutive year and are 12-6-4 all-time in Big Ten postseason play. Last year, the Gophers were defeated on penalty kicks, 3-2, by Illinois in the quarterfinals in Bloomington, Ind. The Gophers have won three Big Ten Championship titles in 1995, 1997 and 2008.
The Gophers last met Nebraska on Oct. 20 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium where the Maroon and Gold fell behind the Cornhuskers, 1-0.
"We are certainly excited to have an opportunity to play Nebraska again," said Golan. "We felt that our regular season game was a good game, they certainly did well to win the regular season Big Ten Championship, and we are excited to play a good team on Wednesday."
