MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Big Ten Conference announced their postseason conference honors on Tuesday afternoon. Three Golden Gophers were honored for their performance on the field this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs had earned Big Ten postseason honors for her outstanding performance through 16 games this season. With a conference-best 114 saves, Hobbs was honored as the 2013 Goalkeeper of the Year as well as being named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the All-Freshman Team. She was able to post four shutouts in Big Ten play and ranks in the top five in all goalkeeper stats in the conference while leading in saves per game and saves. Hobbs was honored as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice (Oct. 7 and Oct. 28) as well as Big Ten Freshman of the Week (Oct. 7).
But Hobbs isn't just turning heads of those in the conference. This season she was also honored by TopDrawerSoccer.Com as well as CS360 for her efforts on the field. On Oct. 18, in a nail biter with the University of Iowa, Hobbs edged her name in the University of Minnesota record books as she broke the program record for most saves in a match that was held by Teresa O'Hearn in 1994 and Lindsey Dare in 2006 with 15. Hobbs was able to make a program-best 16 saves in the 2-2 draw with Iowa. That isn't the end of the story for Hobbs standout season. Currently, with a conference-best 114 saves, she sits tied for third in the programs saves in a single season.
Freshman Josee Stiever and senior Steph Brandt also earned Big Ten postseason honors for their contributions to the Golden Gophers. Stiever was named to the All-Freshman Team while Brandt received the Gopher's Sportsmanship Award.
Stiever, starting all 19 games in the midfield for the Golden Gophers was able to record three goals on the year and tallied one assist. Brandt, coming back from two knee injuries, was ready to show the conference why she decided to rehab to return for her final season with the Gophers. She did just that as she scored a pair of goals and had pair of assists as well.
