MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota sophomore Christian Skaret has been honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, given annually to a representative of each of the conference's 11 men's cross country programs.

The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Skaret has ran in four competitions for the Gophers including a 42nd-place finish (25:23.7) last weekend at the Big Ten championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The time was Skaret's personal record for an eight-kilometer course as the Gophers finished fourth at the conference meet. Skaret previously ran at the Notre Dame Invitational (125th, 26:05.8) and the 28th Annual Roy Griak Invitational (101st, 25:46.7). The sophomore opened the season with a sixth-place finish at the Oz Memorial, finishing the six-kilometer race in 19:42.1.
