Final Stats | Frost Post-Game Statement
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The No. 1 Golden Gophers scored two goals in the final 2:02 to come from behind in a 4-3 win over St. Cloud State at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Milica McMillen (St. Paul, Minn.) scored the game-winner with 1:09 remaining after freshman Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) tipped a shot by senior Baylee Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.) to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:02 to play.
"Obviously, it was an exciting game," head coach Brad Frost said. "St. Cloud did everything they could and played so well. They got the lead early in the third and really made it hard for us to get pucks to the net.
"I'm so proud of our team and the way they battled and competed and found a way to tie that score on a great deflection by Cameranesi. Then, to win it in regulation on just a high-level play from Milica was an incredible way to come back and win."
Minnesota (12-0-0, 10-0-0 WCHA) came from behind twice to earn its 61st consecutive victory. The Huskies led 2-0 and 3-2 in the game.
St. Cloud State (1-8-3, 1-7-2-1 WCHA) took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, marking the first time this season that the Gophers have trailed after one period of play. Senior Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L.) tied it up with a pair of second-period goals, including one on the power-play. Despite outshooting SCSU 9-3 in the period, the Gophers took a 2-2 tie into the second intermission.
The Huskies regained the lead just 49 seconds into the third period on a tally by Lauren Hespenheide. In a nail-biting third period, SCSU held off the Gophers until the 17:58 mark when Cameranesi scored the game-tying goal.
McMillen netted her second game-winning goal of the season just 53 seconds later. Sophomore Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and junior Rachel Ramsey (Chanhassen, Minn.) picked up assists on the play.
SCSU netminder Katie Fitzgerald made 32 saves, and sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) finished with 17 stops as the Gophers held a 36-20 advantage in shots on goal.
Minnesota was 1-for-3 on the power-play while holding St. Cloud State scoreless on four power-play opportunities, including a five-on-three advantage in the second period.
The Golden Gophers return home to host North Dakota at Ridder Arena next weekend. Puck drop is set for 2:07 p.m. CT on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Minnesota is pleased to host Girls Scouts Day and High School Day next weekend.
Prior to Saturday's game, Gopher student-athletes will be collecting canned or non-perishable food donations as part of the University of Minnesota athletics department's annual food drive as well. All proceeds go towards Second Harvest Heartland and Prospect Park Food Shelf.
