University of Minnesota freshman Jose Mendez will play in the Patriot All-American Invitational Dec. 29-31 in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The tournament features PING All-Americans from the previous season as well as young golfers who earned high honors in the pre-college amateur ranks.

A San Jose, Costa Rica, native Mendez has made an impact for the Gophers in the early stages of his career. He led the team with a 73.35 stroke average in six fall tournaments and posted four top-20 (including two top-10) finishes. Mendez did all of this while adjusting to college life on and off the course.

"The beginning was a little hard," he said. "It was a little different from back home. Right now, I'm pretty much used to it. Everyone has helped me to be successful in college. It's fun to be here."

Mendez flew home to Costa Rica after finals and will practice there before going to Arizona. The 54-hole tournament at Wigman Golf Resort will benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, which assists the families of fallen or disabled soldiers. Players will represent these soldiers on the course.
