Jose Mendez has been named a 2013 Athlete of the Year by the Costa Rican newspaper Al Dia. In July, he became the first Costa Rican to win the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship, taking the title by two strokes.
Mendez won the Bob Jones Junior by four strokes the following week. Also in 2013, he won his third consecutive Central American Junior title and his second straight National Junior Stroke Play title. Mendez also qualified for the Toyota Junior World Cup.
In his first fall season with the Gophers, Mendez led the team with a 73.35 stroke average. All 17 of his rounds counted toward the team score, and he posted two individual top-10 finishes.
