Thyken, Hobbs Earn All-Region Awards

MINNEAPOLIS -- Junior co-captain Katie Thyken and freshman goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs were named to the NCAA Division I Women's All-Great Lakes Region Second Team on Wednesday morning by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Thyken and Hobbs were two of the nine Big Ten representives on their respective team.
Thyken lead the Golden Gophers in 2013 by scoring 7 goals and tallying 3 assists ending the season with a team best 17 points. She also lead Minnesota in shots on goal with 16. She earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 28) after scoring two goals in the Gophers victory over Purdue. Thyken was also named to the Minnesota Gold Classic All-Tournament Team and captured the Offensive MVP award during the tournament.
Hobbs had a standout season as she stepped into the role of starting goalkeeper early in the season. Throughout 2013, Hobbs made a conference-best 122 saves as she helped post four conference shutouts. She sat in the top-5 in all Big Ten goalkeeper statistical categories throughout the year. Hobbs was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season (Oct. 7 and Oct. 28) and was also named Co-Freshman of the Week (Oct. 7). In October, Hobbs broke the standing record for saves in a single match with 16 against Iowa. At the end of the season, Hobbs was honored as the 2013 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year as well as being named to the All-Big Ten First Team as well as the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team.
