LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Minnesota wrapped up the Sportco Kick-Off Classic at UNLV with its first win of the 2013 season, defeating the host Rebels, 4-0.
The Gophers (1-3) scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to back a solid three-hit shutout by junior right-hander Sara Moulton (1-2). Moulton went the distance, striking out seven and walking just one.
Offensively, sophomore Erica Meyer went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman Paige Palkovich drove in a run with a triple.
Meyer led off the sixth by reaching on a single off the pitcher's glove, and then stole second base. Sophomore Kaitlyn Richardson followed by drawing a walk, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kari Dorle. Meyer scored the game's first run on a wild pitch, and junior Bree Blanchette drove in a run with a single to left. That's when Palkovich drove her triple off the right field wall to make it 3-0, and Palkovich scored on a single to right by sophomore Erika Smyth.
Minnesota's next games take place next weekend, Feb. 15-17, at Arizona State's Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
