MINNEAPOLIS – Senior Sydney Schwartz turned in a complete-game effort and Tinley Easton drove in four runs to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 5-2 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini in their home opener at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Schwartz (8-8) went the distance for Minnesota (12-20, 4-3 B1G), allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking one in seven innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on Illinois errors to plate two unearned runs and take an early 2-0 lead.
Minnesota broke the game open in the fourth. Brooklyn Jones doubled to start the rally and Maggie Werner reached base before Easton launched a three-run home run down the left field line, extending the lead to 5-0.
Illinois chipped away in the seventh inning with a solo home run from Keirys Click and added another run on an RBI groundout, but Schwartz closed out the game to secure the win.
