FORT MYERS, FLA. - Junior right-hander Sara Moulton just missed a no-hitter, allowing an infield single to the hole at shortstop with one out in the seventh inning, as Minnesota won its second game of the day at the FGCU/LaQuinta Spring Break Invite with a 3-0 victory against Florida Gulf Coast.
Moulton (5-4) pitched her second one-hitter in the span of a week, as she did almost the exact same thing last Saturday, when she took a no-hitter into the final inning against Northern Iowa and allowed a one-out infield single. She struck out nine FGCU batters in the win, helping Minnesota go 2-0 on Friday. The Gophers defeated Albany, 4-2, earlier in the day.
FGCU (4-4) was coming off its tournament last weekend, in which it hung with top-ranked and defending National Champion Alabama, before falling by a score of 2-1.
The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when freshman left fielder Sydney Fabian led off with a double to right center and scored the eventual winning run when sophomore shortstop Tyler Walker followed with a double into the left field corner.
Sophomore third baseman Katie Richardson then lined a single off the first baseman's glove and into right field to score Walker, giving the Gophers a 2-0 lead. Freshman Kayla Wenner pinch ran for Richardson, and she scored the third run on a sharp single to center by sophomore second baseman Erika Smyth.
Minnesota continues the tournament on Saturday, facing Villanova at 8:00 a.m. CT and St. Bonaventure at 2:45 p.m. CT. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the Gophers and those two opponents.
