LAS VEGAS - Minnesota dropped its second game at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic on Saturday, falling to Texas Tech, 5-3.
The Gophers jumped in front with a run in the first inning. Tyler Walker singled up the middle to get things started, and Walker moved to third on an infield single by Erica Meyer, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left by Kaitlyn Richardson.
After Texas Tech (2-1) tied the score in the top of the third, Richardson quickly regained the for the Gophers with a one-out, line-drive shot to right center for Minnesota's first home run this season.
But the Red Raiders responded with a two-out rally in the fourth, plating a pair of runs on a throwing error by Kari Dorle. The senior catcher fired to third to try to pick off a Red Raider runner, but the ball got past Richardson and went into the left field corner to allow both runners to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, Minnesota tied the score at 3-3, with Erika Smyth reaching on an infield single to the second baseman, and then scoring all the way from first on a ball that Walker laced between the second baseman's legs.
But the Red Raiders added single runs in the fifth and sixth to pull away for the victory.
Minnesota wraps up the tournament on Sunday, with games against No. 18/18 Louisville at 12:15 p.m. CT and UNLV at 2:30 p.m.
