Anderson Collects 500th Career Conference Win With Northwestern Sweep

University of Minnesota baseball head coach John Anderson established his 500th career conference win with a 7-1 victory over Northwestern, today in Evanston, Ill. The win also marked a sweep over the Wildcats as the Golden Gophers improve to 22-13 on the season and 7-2 in Big Ten play.
Anderson entered the weekend at 497 career conference wins. With a 4-2 win on Friday and a 6-3 win Saturday, he solidified his 500-win mark with a 7-1 win today. Overall, Anderson holds 1,114 career wins over the course of his 32 years as the Gopher head coach.
After four scoreless innings, the Gophers got the bats going in the fifth inning for two runs and added another five in the seventh en route to the win.
DJ Snelten picked up his third win of the season when he went 6.2 innings, allowed four hits, one earned run, three walks and five strikeouts. Minnesota was led in hitting by Andy Henkemeyer, who was 3-5 with two runs batted in, while rookie Connor Schaefbauer was 2-5 with a RBI and a run scored. After posting eight hits on Friday, six on Saturday, Minnesota broke open in the Sunday game for 12 hits. Ben Meyer and Drew Ghelfi also saw action on the mound to complete the one-run allowed by the Gopher pitchers.
Northwestern's starting pitcher Brandon Magallones got the Wildcats of a couple early jams, but Minnesota plated two in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Abrahamson provided a sacrifice fly that scored Michael Handel, who reached base on a fielder's choice. Schaefbauer singled through the left side to score Dan Olinger as he reached base on an error.
Minnesota added a cushion and pushed across five additional runs in the top of the seventh. Mark Tatera started the inning with a walk and moved to third on a single through the right side from Schaefbauer. With runners on the corners, Northwestern reliever Jack Livingston threw a wild pitch that went all the way to the backstop as Tatera slid into home. As Kurt Schlangen singled to put runners on the corners, an error was committed, which plated Schaefbauer. A throwing error to first by Livingston scored Schlangen from third to make it 5-0. Henkemeyer added a two-run RBI hit up the middle to push across another two for a 7-0 lead.
Northwestern got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when Walker Moses delivered a RBI single to score Colby Everett for the lone Northwestern run.
Minnesota has now played three Big Ten Conference series and has won all three. The Gophers opened the season at Michigan and took two of three games. The team then hosted Ohio State and took another two of three before sweeping Northwestern this weekend.
The Gophers are scheduled to play Augsburg on Tuesday, April 16 at 3:05 p.m. Minnesota then hosts Michigan State, April 19-21. All scheduled games next week will be played at Siebert Field.
