Gophers Tie for Third Place at Hawkeye Invitational

Final Results
The University of Minnesota men's golf team put together yet another consistent tournament this weekend at the Hawkeye Invitational. Two weeks ago the Gophers finished with their best tournament score of the season after rounds of 287-288-283 at the U.S. Intercollegiate.
In Iowa City the squad posted back-to-back scores of 293 on Saturday and combined to shoot a 294 in the final round on Sunday at Finkbine Golf Course. The Gophers 54-hole score of 880 tied with Charlotte for third place, 12 shots shy of second place Iowa and 13 shots off of the champion Kansas.
Minnesota junior Alex Gaugert came into the final round in a tie for first place but Sunday's round of 75 set the Lake Geneva, Wis. native back a couple of spots, as he finished in fourth place with a three-round score of 214. Gaugert will return to the Twin Cities with a career-low 18-hole score (second-round 68) tournament finish (4th), 54-hole score (214) and tournament score to par (-2).
The Gophers' stroke average leader the last two seasons, senior Erik Van Rooyen, gave Minnesota its second top-10 finish as he tied for sixth with an even par 54-hole total of 216. It was Van Rooyen's fourth top-10 of the season and ninth of his collegiate career.
Fellow senior Robert Bell posted a final round 75 and sophomore Tyler Lowenstein contributed a 74, as both players finished with 54-hole totals of 226 and tied them with two other players for 32nd place. Freshman Jon DuToit finished in a tie for 37th place with a three-day card of 228.
The Gophers will head to Penn State April 20-21 for the Rutherford Intercollegiate in what will be the final regular season tune-up. The Big Ten Championships will be the following week in French Lick, Ind.
