University of Minnesota freshman Connor Schaefbauer (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has been named the Big Ten Rookie of the Week after his performance against North Dakota State and Iowa last week. The weekly award is the first of Schaefbauer's career and Gopher Baseball's sixth accolade this season. Schaefbauer is the first Golden Gopher to earn rookie of the week honors since Tom Windle received the honor in 2011.
Moving into the leadoff position last week, Schaebauer hit .313 against the Bison (4/24) and the Hawkeyes last weekend. Starting in all four games, he went 1-3 against the Bison and reached base nine times at Iowa. Against the Hawkeyes, Schaefbauer drove in four runs and scored three to help the University of Minnesota take two of three games. His four RBI tied for second on the team last weekend and he now has 17 this season. As a rookie, Schaefbauer ranks second on the team in batting average (.310), scored 10 runs, five doubles and 32 total bases.
The Golden Gophers are scheduled to compete against St. Thomas on May 1 before traveling to Penn State next weekend. Wednesday's game is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at Siebert. The first game at PSU is at 5:05 p.m. CT, followed by 1:05 p.m. Saturday and noon CT. Sunday.
