Gophers Drop Game One to Ohio State, 4-3

3/27/2026 7:22:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team welcomed Ohio State University for their first Big Ten Conference home matchup of the season, falling to the Buckeyes 4-3 this afternoon at Siebert Field.

Cole Selvig started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota, tossing six innings and striking out four. Joe Sperry was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings and striking out three.

At the plate, the Gophers were paced by Davis Hamilton, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, two walks and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling to an early 1-0 deficit, the Gophers put runs on the board in the second inning when Davis Hamilton left the yard for a two run home run over the right field wall to gain a 2-1 advantage.

The Gophers lost the lead they built in the second after Ohio State tallied runs on a solo home run in the fourth and a two run home run in the sixth.

Minnesota got back on the board in the eighth trailing 4-2 when Jack Spanier came across to score on a bases loaded wild pitch to close the gap to 4-3. The Gophers were unable to get any closer though, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES

» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed two runs across.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 33 Ohio State hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out nine.
» The Gophers drew eight walks from Ohio State pitching.
