Baseball's Larson Named an Academic All-American

University of Minnesota baseball center fielder Troy Larson has been named a 2013 Capital One Academic All-American, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Landing a spot as a second-team selection, Larson is the only baseball student-athlete listed from a Big Ten institution. It also marks the second-straight year Larson has been named an Academic All-American. The award is given to honorees that excel both in the classroom and on the field.
Larson is the only Golden Gopher to play in all 54 games this season and hit .304, ranking second on the team. In 168 at bats, he had 24 runs scored, 14 RBI and a fielding percentage of .991 his senior season. With his six hits in the Big Ten Tournament, Larson received his first All-Tournament honors. A starting outfielder for Minnesota, the Oakdale, Minn., native is known for his academic success. Now a two-time Academic All-American, Larson holds one of the best grade point averages in the entire Minnesota athletic student body (3.954). Double majoring in genetics/cell biology and biochemistry, Larson has received multiple Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades. Already accepted into medical school, Larson was awarded Minnesota's Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship Award earlier this year.
