Gophers Win First Game of Doubleheader, 8-0

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. -- Six extra-base hits and a two-hit shutout by junior pitcher Sara Moulton powered the University of Minnesota softball team to an 8-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Indiana.
The Gophers (31-16, 12-6 Big Ten) won in five innings, as Moulton struck out seven batters and held the Hoosiers (19-32, 3-17 Big Ten) scoreless.
Senior catcher Kari Dorle started the scoring with a solo home run, her third of the season, in the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Erika Smyth added a two-run double to left with two outs in the first, as the Gophers jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, freshman right fielder Kayla Wenner hit a two-run homer over the netting in center field to key a three-run inning and help Minnesota take a 7-0 lead.
Minnesota also hit four doubles, including two by sophomore left fielder Erica Meyer, before an RBI single by Dorle scored sophomore shortstop Tyler Walker to clinch the victory.
