Welcome to Gophersports.com's Summer Video Vault. Each week we'll bring you a new video from our archives.
The 1985-86 season marked a new era of Golden Gopher hockey as Doug Woog took the reigns of the program as head coach. All Woog did in his first season was lead Minnesota to 35 wins, a single-season record that still stands today. Woog remains the all-time winningest coach in the illustrious history of Gopher hockey.
An All-American for the Gophers in 1965, Woog benefited from a roster loaded with talent. Corey Millen led the team in scoring with 83 points, while Pat Micheletti wrapped up a stellar college career with 80 points. Micheletti's 269 points rank second in school history, trailing only Gopher legend John Mayasich. In net, Minnesota was backstopped by John Blue and Frank Pietrangelo.
After sweeping Boston University in the NCAA Quarterfinals, Minnesota's hopes for a national title were derailed in a 5-4 loss to Michigan State. The Golden Gophers rebounded for a third-place finish with a 6-4 win over Denver.
