Genki Hirayama Takes Home Title at 35th MGA Players' Championship

University of Minnesota junior Genki Hirayama defeated Trent Peterson of Valleywood Golf Course 3 and 2 in the final match to take home the title at the 35th Annual Minnesota Golf Association Players' Championship. The championships, played at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, started with a field of 64.

Hirayama becomes the 10th player with Gopher ties to win the event, including current Golden Gopher head coach John Carlson and former Minnesota All-American Tom Lehman. Carlson took home the title at the 2000 championships at The Wilds Golf Club while Lehman won the 1980 event at White Bear Yacht Club.

Hirayama, a native of Nagaski, Japan made it to the finals by outlasting Dalton Charboneau in 20 holes in the semifinal match and a 2 and 1 victory over Scott Gustafson in the quarterfinals.
