RECORDS: University of Minnesota (7-1-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten); Jacksonville University (4-3-0, 0-0-0 Atlantic Sun).
The University of Minnesota Women's Soccer team was able to shutout the Jacksonville University Dolphins 3-0 Sunday afternoon. This comes at the end of a tough roadtrip that brought the Gophers down south to challenge No. 9 Florida and the Dolphins.
The Gophers improved their overall record to 7-1-0 on the season going into Big Ten play next weekend against Indiana. The Gophers are now 2-1 on the road after wins over Iowa State and Jacksonville and a loss given by Florida on Friday.
GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES
Lauren Bauer had a great game on both sides of the ball. Defensively Bauer was able to break up important plays as the Dolphins made their way to the goal. In the 21st minute, Bauer was able to score on a header off of a corner kick from defensive pal, MacKenzie Misel. Misel is credited with the assist.
Steph Brandt was able to score her first goal of the season off of Haley Helverson and Simone Kolander. Brandt has had quite a few shots on goal this season but this is the first she was able to connect. Brandt is back after an injury that kept her out of play the majority of the season.
Katie Thyken was able to score her fifth goal of the season in the second half for the Gophers. She was assisted by Taylor Stainbrook. Thyken is the leading scorer for Minnesota this season.
MacKenzie Misel was able to record an assist during the game against JU. She has been an ancor on defense this season for the Gophers. She has played in every minute of every game in 2013.
QUOTES:
Head coach Stefanie Golan on today's match against Jacksonville...
"Today we came out with tired legs, we came out pretty banged from the effort on Friday and we played a lot of players. Different players were able to step up and we talked about that before the game. The strength of our team is our team. We had ten different players going into this game that had either a goal or an assist. We create opportunities and we feel confident that those opportunities will fall. We don't care who puts into the back of the net, we just know that we need to create those opportunties. I am so excited for Bauer to be able to score on that header. I am excited for Steph to get her first one of the year because I feel like she has been playing very well as of late and it just hasn't fallen her way. This kids put forth a heck of an effort on a day that is tough to play."
WHAT IS NEXT:
The Golden Gophers will hit the road for the first of three weeks of traveling as they head to Florida to take on Florida on Friday, Sept. 13 at 6:00 p.m. and Jacksonville on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m. The Gophers look to defend their undefeated record on the road.
