The No. 18 University of Minnesota fell to No. 16 Illinois, 25-22, 32-30 and 25-19 to drop to 11-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Big Ten.

Paige Tapp led the Gophers with 13 kills, committed one error and in 22 attempts to hit .545. Daly Santana had 11 kills and 10 digs for a double double. Katie Schau also had a double double when she had a team-high 12 digs and 33 assists. Hannah Tapp led the team with eight blocks. As a team, the Gophers hit .165 to Illinois' .227. Despite the Gophers outblocking Illinois, 16-10, the Illini had 54 kills and 60 digs.

Minnesota looks to return to the win column, Sunday, when it travels to Northwestern at 1 p.m.

Set 1: Illinois came from behind and took the first set, 25-22. The Illini trailed 21-18 and went on a run at the end of the set to go up, 1-0. Minnesota jumped out to a 12-8 lead, but Illinois would come back to tie the set at 15-15. The two teams exchanged points until Minnesota went up 22-18 on the serve rotation of Goehner. The Illini, however, would finish the set on a 7-1 run to take the set. Minnesota hit .312 in the set as Paige Tapp had five kills and hit .833. Illinois hit .282

Set 2: Minnesota and Illinois would go through a marathon in the second set, as the Illini took a 2-0 lead off a 32-30 second set win. Illinois jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Minnesota responded and came back to tie it at 12-12. Minnesota would take an 18-14 lead. Illinois would come back to tie the set at 19-19 on a kill from Jocelyn Birks. Minnesota would go up 21-19 as Illinois took a timeout. The Illini would come back and tie the set at 22 before Minnesota went up 25-24. The two teams endured ties all the way through to 30-30 before Illinois closed out the set with back-to-back blocks, their fifth and sixth of the set.

Set 3: The Illini took the match with a 25-19 third set win and a 3-0 win. Illinois jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third as Minnesota took a timeout. The Gophers closed the gap to 11-9, but the Illini went on another run to take a 16-11 lead as Minnesota used its second timeout. Illinois took a 21-16 lead on a Birks kill and she finished off the match with a kill for the 25-19 third set final.
