DULUTH, Minn. – Sophomore Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) and junior Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) led the top-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 3-0 win on the road at Minnesota Duluth Friday night.
Cameranesi led the way with three points as she scored the game-winning goal in the first period and set up Brandt for two third-period goals. With the win, the Gophers improved to 3-0-0 on the season and opened WCHA league play with a victory.
Junior Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) recorded 26 saves in her 17th career shutout. Minnesota Duluth (1-3-1, 0-3-0 WCHA) received 35 saves from Kayla Black, and the Gophers outshot the Bulldogs, 38-26.
"I'm really happy with the win," head coach Brad Frost said. "We started a little slow here tonight and had our moments where we had a few lulls, but overall we really gutted it out, going into the third with a 1-0 lead. To get two goals to ice it was big.
"Our penalty kill was really good again with a lot of blocked shots. Overall, it was one of those WCHA games on the road against a very good club, so we're happy with the three points."
Minnesota was two-for-three on the power play and killed off two UMD power-play opportunities. The Gophers are now a perfect 14-for-14 on the penalty kill this season to lead the nation.
Cameranesi put the Gophers on the board at the 15:40 mark of the first period when she buried a power-play goal from junior Milica McMillen (St. Paul, Minn.) and senior Rachel Ramsey (Chanhassen, Minn.).
The teams skated to a scoreless second period, and the Gophers took a 1-0 lead into the third. Brandt scored two third-period goals to seal the victory, including a power-play goal with just 1:15 remaining. Freshman Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn.) picked up an assist on Brandt's second goal, registering her first collegiate point. Cameranesi also assisted both of Brandt's goals, completing her three-point effort.
Cameranesi started her Gopher career with two big games at AMSOIL Arena, scoring her first three collegiate goals against the Bulldogs last October. She was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week after recording four points (three goals, one assist) in the Gophers' sweep at UMD on Oct. 18-19, 2013.
The Gophers were awarded a penalty shot just before Cameranesi's first-period goal when UMD's Sidney Morin covered the puck in the crease. Junior Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids, Minn.) took the shot, but Black made the save. It was the first time a Gopher attempted a penalty shot, aside from a shootout attempt, since Emily West scored on a penalty shot against Wisconsin in the 2012 national championship game at AMSOIL Arena on March 18, 2012.
Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth wrap up the series at 6 p.m. CT Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.
