The No. 23 University of Minnesota defeated Maryland in three sets, 25-15, 26-24 and 25-17 to improve to 12-4 on the season and 2-3 in the Big Ten.
Daly Santana led the Golden Gophers with 16 kills and in 28 attempts to hit a team-high .500. Santana and Sarah Wilhite tied for the team lead in digs with eight each. Molly Lohman led the Gophers with six blocks. Katie Schau posted 37 assists in the win. As a team, the Gophers hit .387 to Maryland's .150. The Gophers also outblocked the Terrapins 8-4, as well as digs 42-34.
Minnesota will look to get another victory at home Saturday night, when they host Rutgers at 7:00 pm.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota took a 1-0 lead when it hit .429 in the set and a 73 percent sideout ratio for a 25-15 set win. The Golden Gophers opened the set with a 12-4 lead with a Santana kill. The Gophers went up 17-8 on back-to-back kills by Paige Tapp, 18-8 on a Maryland attack error and 19-8 on a block. Minnesota pushed the lead to 22-13 on a Santana kill, while Santana contributed her sixth kill of the set on the game-winning point.
Set 2: Minnesota rallied from an early deficit and came back to win the second set, 26-24, and take a 2-0 lead. The Gophers trailed 10-6 with a Gopher attack error and forced Minnesota to use its first timeout. The Gophers trailed 17-14 on a Maryland kill. Minnesota, however, would come back on a 9-3 run and took its first lead on a Santana kill to go up, 22-21. From then on, the Gophers and Terps tied at 22, before Minnesota attempted its first set point at 24-22. Maryland responded and took a timeout and tied up the set on back-to-back kills. Minnesota, however, would close on the set with a Santana kill and a block from Paige Tapp and Molly Lohman to go up, 2-0. Despite the Terps hitting .314, Minnesota hit .306 and had three blocks to Maryland’s one.
Set 3: Hannah Tapp put the Gophers up, 10-5 on a kill, while Katie Schau put the Gophers up, 14-9. Paige Tapp pushed the score to 18-11 on her 11th kill of the match. Sarah Wilhite added a kill for 22-14 and again for 23-15. The Gophers closed out the match with block from Hannah Tapp and a kill from Wilhite, her sixth of the night. Minnesota hit .448 in the set and added another three blocks. Santana and Paige Tapp hit .571 in the set.
