STILLWATER, Okla. - The Minnesota women's tennis team will join 23 other schools at the 2014 USTA/ITA Central Region Championships Oct. 16-20 at Oklahoma State's Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. The team will compete in both singles and doubles over the weekend.
Caroline Ryba, Kendall Heitzner, Jessika Mozia, Mehvish Safdar, Paula Rincon-Otero, and Maja Vujic will kick off the tournament with qualifying singles play Thursday at 9 a.m. Two wins in the 96-player bracket advance a player into the main draw.
Ryba, the No. 1 seed in the qualifying draw, will have a first-round bye and will start her tournament against either Sierra Halverson of SIUE or Nebraska's Spurti Shivalingaiah. Fellow freshman and 23rd-seeded Safdar will start the tournament with a contest against Drake's Melania Jaglarz.
Rincon-Otero's first match will be against Drake's Melania Jaglarz, while Heitzner will take on Monique Krutak of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and No. 20-seed Mozia will play Madison Cook of St. Louis. Sophomore Vujic drew South Dakota State's Beatriz Souza in the first qualifying round.
This is the first time for Oklahoma State, which opened the Greenwood Tennis Center earlier this year, to host the event.
The Gophers complete their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H.
