Ryba Wins Twice to Reach Round of 16

STILLWATER, Okla. - Minnesota women's tennis freshman Caroline Ryba reached the round of 16 in singles and two Golden Gopher doubles tandems advanced at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. Friday. Play in both singles and doubles picks up Saturday.
The morning kicked off with Tereza Brichacova and Mehvish Safdar dispatching Monique Krutak of McKenzie Thomas Southern Illinois, Edwardsville, 8-1, in doubles. Aria Lambert and Maja Vujic beat Arkansas' Shannon Hudson and Mia Jurasic, 8-2, to put two Minnesota tandems in the second round.
Fifth-seeded Brichacova and Safdar will face Nicole Breauz and Flavia Araujo of Arkansas in the round of 32, while Lambert and Vujic will clash with Maria Belen Ludueña and Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas.
Ryba, who advanced to the singles main draw with one qualifying draw win Thursday, got her day started by taking down Zita Enbroks of Oklahoma, rallying to capture a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. She later pulled off an upset of fifth-seeded Julia Schiller of Wichita State, 6-4, 6-2. Now 6-1 in her young collegiate career, Ryba will face ninth-seeded Katarina Adamovic of host Oklahoma State in the third round of the 64-player draw.
Gophers Brichacova, Jessika Mozia, and Paula Rincon-Otero won their first-round singles matches before falling in the second round. Brichacova and Mozia each won in straight sets against opponents from Kansas, defeating Summer Collins and Madison Harrison, respectively. Rincon-Otero outlasted Morgan Chumney of Oklahoma 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) in the first round.
Lambert and doubles duos of Mozia and Kendall Heitzner and Rincon-Otero and Julia Courter lost in the first round of main-draw play.
Following their time in Stillwater, the Gophers complete their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H.
