Brichacova and Safdar Reach Quarterfinals

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Minnesota women's tennis doubles duo of Tereza Brichacova and Mehvish Safdar advanced to the quarterfinal round of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. Saturday. The pairing won two matches to reach Sunday competition.
Senior Brichacova and freshman Safdar, who won their first-round match Friday, began the day with an 8-2 win over Nicole Breaux and Flavia Araujo of Arkansas. To make it to the quarterfinal, they defeated Tulsa's Marcelina Cichon and Mahitha Daddireddy, 8-5. The fifth-seeded tandem will take on Luca Pump and Aleksandra Trifunovic of Wichita State in its next match.
As a doubles combination, Brichacova and Safdar are now 6-1. Brichacova now has 49 doubles wins as a Gopher.
Also in doubles action, Maja Vujic and Aria Lambert were edged, 8-7 (6), by Kansas' Maria Belen Ludueña and Maria Jose Cardona in their first match of the day.
The lone Minnesota student-athlete remaining in the singles main draw going into the day, freshman Caroline Ryba, fell in the round of 16 to Katarina Adamovic of host Oklahoma State. Ryba began the tournament in the qualifying round.
In consolation singles play, the Gophers went 2-6. Picking of both of the Maroon and Gold's wins was sophomore Maja Vujic, who dispatched Nebraska's Izabella Zgierska and Drake's Adrienne Jensen in straight sets.
Following their time in Stillwater, the Gophers complete their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H.
