Gophers Wrap Up Play in Stillwater

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Minnesota women's tennis doubles pairing of Tereza Brichacova and Mehvish Safdar dropped its quarterfinal round match at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. Sunday. The match was the last of the 24-team tournament for the Maroon and Gold.

Senior Brichacova and freshman Safdar, who won their first-round match Friday and won twice more Saturday, fell in their fourth match of the weekend to Luca Pump and Aleksandra Trifunovic of Wichita State, 8-4.

Brichacova and Safdar are now 6-2 as a tandem.

In the tournament, five Gophers qualified for the singles main draw. Qualifying freshman Caroline Ryba advanced the furthest, reaching the round of 16. Minnesota started the event with four main-draw doubles pairings. Brichacova and Safdar won three matches to extend their tournament into Sunday and Aria Lambert and Maja Vujic made it to round of 32 by winning their first match.

Following a weekend off next week, Gophers complete their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H. Their spring dual match season will begin Jan. 18 when they host Milwaukee and North Dakota at the Baseline Tennis Center.
