RECORDS: University of Minnesota (8-7-1, Big Ten Conference 5-4-1); University of Wisconsin (13-2-1, Big Ten Conference 7-1-1)
For the first time since 2010, the University of Minnesota women's soccer team fell to border rival and No. 15-ranked Wisconsin. With the loss, the Gophers fall to 8-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in conference play.
The Maroon and Gold fell behind in the 5th minute of play as Kodee Williams beat a Minnesota defender and the Gophers goalkeeper to give the Badgers the lead assisted by Rose Lavelle. Senior Taylor Wodnick would respond in the 24th minute as she headed a ball from sophomore Josee Stiever over the Wisconsin goalkeeper to even the score at 1. The two teams would enter halftime knotted at one all.
The game would turn into the tale of two halves as Minnesota would lose its momentum and allow the Badgers to score three unanswered goals to end the annual border battle with a 4-1 score.
The Badgers first goal of the second half shifted the momentum as Lavelle would score her third goal of the season and third point of the match off a corner kick in the 56th minute of play. In the next ten minutes of the game Cara Walls netted her tenth and eleventh goal of the season to bring the Badgers final tally to four over the Gophers in regulation.
Minnesota trailed in shots, 18-14, as the Badgers were able to earn a total of six corner kicks on the night. Minnesota fired six shots on goal with three combined from Gopher defenders Haley Helverson and Ashley Pafko. Olivia Schultz, Taylor Stainbrook and Kellie McGahn added one shot on target each.
Sophomore goalkeeper, Tarah Hobbs, came up with six saves for a total of 69 on the season.
This is the second time this season that the Maroon and Gold have lost 4-1 to a ranked opponent. The first came at the hands of No. 2 Florida State in the opening weekend of play.
The Gophers will wrap up their home regular season schedule with a pair of matches against Big Ten newcomers Maryland and Rutgers at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium next Friday and Sunday respectively.
