LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced the recipients of its 2013-14 NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete awards Wednesday. Seven members of the 2014 University of Minnesota softball team earned the accolade.
To receive the honor, a student-athlete had to maintain 3.5 grade point average (GPA) throughout the 2013-14 school year. A total of 1,096 NCAA Division I softball players were honored. In all, 408 different schools across NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, the NAIA, junior college, and high school scored academic plaudits.
Leading the way for the Golden Gophers was senior Bree Blanchette, who had a perfect 4.0 in her final year in Maroon and Gold. She graduated with a degree in business and marketing education. Fellow senior and business and marketing education major Sara Moulton also achieved NFCA All-America Scholar status.
Joining Blanchette and Moulton on the list were 2014 juniors Erica Meyer (marketing), Kaitlyn Richardson (human resources and industrial relations), and Hannah Granger (foundations of elementary education), as well as sophomore Kayla Wenner (nutrition), and freshman Hannah Evavold (major undeclared).
As a team, Minnesota posted a cumulative 3.299 GPA in 2013-14. The Gophers, who won the Big Ten Tournament and reached their first-ever NCAA Super Regional, also boasted three Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and a program-record 11 Academic All-Big Ten selections.
