MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey will host the first regular-season home series of the year this weekend when Bemidji State visits Mariucci Arena, and the Maroon & Gold will have plenty of festivities planned to kick off the 94th season of Gopher Hockey.
Friday's series opener with the Beavers will see Minnesota unveil its 2014 Big Ten regular-season championship banner during a pre-game ceremony. The inaugural Big Ten title last year marked the Gophers' 15th overall regular-season conference championship and third-straight -- a first for the program. Additionally, the first 1,500 fans at Friday's game will receive a limited-edition, foil-stamped poster. Posters will be available on the concourse at Section 2 of Mariucci Arena. Game time for Friday's series opener is set for 8:12 p.m. The Big Ten Network will broadcast the game while 1500 ESPN and the Gopher Radio Network will also call the action.
Saturday's series finale will feature a recognition ceremony for First Team All-American Mike Reilly during the first period of play. Reilly, who also earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award, is the first Minnesota player to earn First Team All-America honors since Ryan Stoa in 2009 and the school's 42nd overall First Team All-America honor. The junior defenseman set new career highs with 33 points, nine goals and 24 assists last year as a sophomore. Game time for Saturday is set for 7:05 p.m. with FOX Sports North PLUS televising the game and 1500 ESPN the Gopher Radio Network providing the audio broadcast.
The 94th season of Gopher Hockey will see the Maroon & Gold look to defend the inaugural Big Ten regular-season conference title. Minnesota has won three-straight regular-season crowns entering the 2014-15 campaign and has reached the NCAA Frozen Four in two of the last three seasons including a national runner-up finish last year.
