MINNEAPOLIS - A native of Palatine, Ill., Tess Wasowicz made her debut in Maroon & Gold at the Oz Memorial run earlier this season after redshirting her first year on campus. Before joining the Gophers, Wasowicz was a two time all-state performer in cross country and had three top-four finishes at the Illinois state meet in the 4x800-meter relay. A global studies and Spanish major, Wasowicz also enjoys reading, skiing and cooking.

What is your favorite thing about Gopher track/cross country?

My experience on the Gopher track & field and cross country team has been very positive. One of my favorite things about the program is the uplifting atmosphere and community. I know that I can always count on every one of my teammates to bring encouragement and a positive attitude daily.

What is your best memory with the team so far?

Probably when almost our whole team road tripped to Big Tens and ran around like crazy people with Minnesota flags, cheering on our squad.

What's your proudest accomplishment in your collegiate running career so far?

My proudest accomplishment as a first year runner was when I improved by two minutes at the Griak Invitational.

What are your major and career goals?

I am planning on majoring in global studies and Spanish. As for my career, I am hoping to someday work for an organization that promotes transnational human rights through education and political action.

How did you choose the University of Minnesota?

I knew right after I went on my official visit that the academics, diversity of the cities, and the team environment was the perfect fit for me.

How did you first get into running?

When I was younger I would race my dad around the block, and as I got older I took an interest in cross country in junior high and high school.

Were you involved in any other sports growing up?

I played soccer and softball. I'm pretty sure every cross country runner is an ex-soccer player.

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions?

Biofreeze! Before any and every race I always coat my legs with it. I also write an important verse or inspiring quote on my hand.

What do you think makes being a Gopher so special?

Being a Golden Gopher goes along with one's identity. It comes with pride and excellence. I am very blessed to call myself a Gopher and to wear the M on my uniform.

What are you most looking forward to about the rest of this season?

I'm looking forward to even more fun and practices filled with positivity and teamwork. I am very excited to see who steps up to challenges and what we can accomplish as a team.
